General Directions (see markers on the route map)

.) Start from the green in the centre of Reeth, map ref. SE038993. From the green follow the road south east out of the town and over the road bridge across Arkle Beck. Once across the bridge take the path on the left on the crown of the bend and follow it for about 300m to the village of Fremington. In Fremington turn left to walk up the road climbing steeply up the hillside. The road deteriorates into a stony track and after about 1.7km from Fremington the track reaches Fremington Edge at map ref. NZ044007 at the top of the climb.

.) Turn left at the top of the climb and follow the path along Fremington Edge with the scars of lead mining away to the right and lovely views across the valley of Arkle Beck to the left. After about 2.6km along Fremington Edge the path reaches a large cairn at the end of the edge. From the cairn the path descends steeply down the end of the hill to Storthwaite Hall next to Slei Beck. At Storthwaite Hall the path meets a track in front of the hall.

.) Here turn right and follow the track beside Arkle Beck for about 1.4km to the village of Langthwaite at map ref. NZ005024. At Langthwaite cross the road bridge over Arkle Beck and follow the road to the left down the valley for about 500m to a road junction in Arkle Town at map ref. NZ007019. At the road junction turn right off the road to follow a footpath climbing up the valley of the stream called Fore Gill. About 1.6km from the road at Arkle Town and after a final zig-zag, the path reaches a minor road at map ref.NY989000.

.) At the road, at map ref.NY989000, turn left and follow the road down a steep slope for about 100m to the edge of a beck. Here turn left off the road and make your way down a narrow rough stony valley for almost 1km to Barney Beck. At Barney Beck turn left and follow the path along the side of the beck for about 2km to map ref. SE013990 about 350m beyond Thiernswood Hall. Turn left here off the track to follow a footpath across the fields to Healaugh.

.) Turn right off the main road (B6270) through Healaugh at the eastern end of the village at map ref. SE019990 and follow the footpath across the fields down to the River Swale. At the river bank turn left and follow the path along the river bank and across the fields to a minor road at the edge of reeth at map ref. SE034991. Follow the road back into Reeth and up the slope back to the green and the end of the walk.
