General Directions (see markers on the route map)

1.) Start at the long gravel layby at map ref. SE068885, on th A684 just to the east of West Witton. Follow the roadside verge for about 100m westwards, towards West Witton and take the public footpath on the left that doubles back heading eastwards across the fields for about 800m to Bay Bolton Avenue. At this farm access road turn right and walk along the avenue past Park Gate Farm for about 400m to a sharp left hand bend in the track. At the bend continue straight ahead over a stile to follow a path climbing up the bank through some woodland. Continue along the path to climb up Capple Bank and through a strip of woodland to a minor road at the top of the climb at map ref. SE076874. At the road turn right and walk along the road parallel to the race horse training gallops. This is the western end of the gollops that extend all the way to Middleham.

2.) After 900m along the road, at Penhill Farm bear right to follow the road down the hill called Witton Steeps for about 500m to a sharp right hand bend in the road. On the crown of the bend take the track off the road to the left. Follow the track, called High Lane, heading westwards for about 1.8km to map ref. SE044879.

3.) At map ref. SE044879 turn right off High Lane on to another walled track called Green Gate. Follow this track for about 1.5km heading generally northeast down the hillside to the A684 at the western end of West Witton. At the main road turn right and walk along the main road through West Witton for about 1km back to the layby at the eastern end of the village to end the walk where the it began .
