General Directions (see markers on the route map)

.) Start at the long gravel lay-by, map ref. SE067884 just east of West Witton on the A684. From the lay-by walk along the main road for about 400m into West Witton to a small red pillar box on the left opposite a track joining the main road on the right. Next to the red letter box is a footpath sign indicating the public footpath between the houses. Follow this public footpath across the fields for about 1.3km to map ref. SE076880. Turn right here to follow a public footpath climbing straight up Capple Bank, through Capplebank Plantation, to a minor road at map ref. SE076874. At the road turn right and walk along the road to the junction at Penhill Farm.

.) Turn left at the junction by Penhill Farm and continue south along the road for 500m from the junction to a public bridleway on the right hand side of the road. Turn right off the road and follow the bridleway climbing up the eastern flank of Penhill. At the top of the steep part of the climb, turn right and follow the boundary wall around the summit plateau of Penhill to the Height of Hazely at map ref. SE037860. Take care here to keep to the right (west) of the wall running south from the Height of Hazely. Follow this wall down for about 1km to the col between the Height of Hazely and Harland Hill.

.) On the col between the Height of Hazely and Harland Hill turn right to follow a public bridleway down a steep descent for about 1.7km to a minor road at map ref. SE018854 in Waldendale. Where the track joins the road there is a restored flue chimney from the lead mining era. At the road turn right and walk along the road to Cote Bridge over Walden Beck. Just before the bridge there is a field gate on the right and a finger post indicating a public footpath. Turn off the road here to follow the public footpath across the fields for about 1.7km to a track called Morpeth Gate at map ref. SE022872.

.) At the Morpeth Gate track turn left and walk down the hill for about 250m to a track on the right. Just before the track there is a public footpath on the right hand side of the road. Turn right here onto the public footpath across the fields for about 1.5km to join the B6160 at map ref. SE024885 via a stone squeeze stile. At the B6160 turn right and walk along the road for about 150m where there is a gravel farm storage area on the left and next to it a pair of iron field gates. To the left of the field gates is a an iron pedestrian gate to a public footpath across the field. Follow this path for about 250m through a narrow strip of woodland to the A684 at Hestholme Bridge over Bishopdale Beck. At the A684 turn right and walk along the main road for about 100m to a stile on the left hand side of the road to a public footpath. Walk along this footpath following the River Ure downstream for about 2km to Redmire Force where the river tumbles over a rock shelf about 1m high.

.) From Redmire Force continue along the riverside path through an area of glacial moraines for about 1.4km to map ref. SE055898. Here take the right hand fork in the path (marked by a finger post) to join an old by-way across the fields and then join the access road to High Wanlass farm at map ref. SE059895. At the farm access road turn right and follow the farm access road for about 1.5km to the A684 in West Witton. At the A684 turn left and walk along the A684 for about 400m back to the lay-by on the edge of the village and the end of the walk.
