General Directions (see markers on the route map)

.) Start at the public car park at map ref. SD899627, next to the Tourist Information Centre(TIC) on the southern edge of Malham village. Leave the car park past the TIC and cross the road to turn left and walk about 100m along the path between the road and the beck to a footbridge over Malham Beck. Once over the beck, turn right and follow the footpath southwards along the Pennine Way route for about 300m, then turn left to follow the path next to Gordale Beck. Continue along this path for about 1.2km to a very pretty waterfall called Janet's Foss at map ref. SD911633.

.) Continue along the path past the waterfall for about 100m to a minor road. At the road turn right and follow the road for about 100m to a little lay-by and stone arch bridge over Gordlae Beck. On the left from the lay-by there is a good gravel footpath across a camping field. The path continues with Gordale Beck on the left leading into the impressive chasm of Gordale Scar. The walls of the gorge (a collapsed cavern) tower overhead and there does not seem to be a way through. Gordale Beck flows in a shallow sheet over the rock strewn floor. Keep to the left of the beck until you reach a waterfall about 5m high over a large deposit of fluvial cascade tufa, a calcium mineral deposited by the beck. There is a scrambling route up the tufa at the side of the waterfall with many large foot & hand holds. At the top of the waterfall a very steep path leads up a long climb out of the gorge to the limestone pavement on the plateau above.

.) From the top of the climb follow the path through the limestone pavement for about 1.2km to stone step stile over a stone wall on to a minor road at map ref. SD905652. At the road turn right and walk along the road for about 100m and then bear right to follow a track across the field to Street Gate on Mastiles Lane. Cross Mastiles Lane and continue northwards along the track for about 2km to map ref. SD907675. Here, on the access track to Middle House Farm (about 150m before the farm) there is a footpath off to the left. Follow this path climbing up the hillside past Middle House (derelict/being renovated?). About 200m beyond Middle House at map ref. SD906684 the path forks.

.) At map ref. SD906684, where the path forks, take the left hand fork and follow the track across Out Pasture. The path drops down through a craggy limestone outcrop and the steep valley side to cross Cowside Beck. Beyond the beck the path leads to a minor road at map ref. SD898705 next to Darnbrook House.

.) At the road turn left and follow the road for about 2km to map ref. SD884691 where the Pennine Way crosses the road. At the wall corner on the left turn off the road and follow the Pennine Way route across the hillside for almost 2km to a track at the northwestern corner of Malham tarn. Continue along the Pennine Way route around Malham Tarn, past the Malham Tarn Field Centre and out to a road at map ref. SD893658 where there is a large car park.

.) At the car park entrance turn right and walk along the road for about 70m to pass a gate across the road at a stone wall. Continue for another 100m to a gate on the left to a path across the sheep pasture. Continue along this path which is still the Pennine Way route following a narrow limestone valley with several small caves on the left for about 1km to the site of an ancient dried up waterfall with a view down the dry valley called Watlowes. The path leads around a limestone crag and then doubles back down some steps to the bottom of Watlowes valley. Continue along the Pennine Way route to the limestone pavement at the southern end of Watlowes on top of Malham Cove.

.) Cross the limestone pavement above Malham Cove to the steps and footpath down the western side of the cove. Continue along the Pennine Way beside Malham Beck to map ref. SD896638, about 300m from the face of the cove. Turn left here to cross a footbridge over Malham Beck and follow the path across the fields climbing up to a walled track leading back into Malham village past the Youth Hostel. Follow the road down into the village over Malham Beck and back to the car park by the Tourist Information Office and the end of the walk.
