General Directions (see markers on the route map)

.) Start at the informal lay-by on the A683 between Sedburgh and Kirby Stephen, next to the Cross keys temperence hotel at map ref. SD698969. From the parking spot take the path down to a footbridge over the River Rawthey. Once across the bridge keep straight on, leaving the path and head up the steep lower slopes of Yarlside over rough tufts of coarse grass for 900m to the intake wall at map ref. SD693798. At the wall turn left to head north west for about 700m to the start of the summit ridge of Yarlside. Follow the summit ridge for about 500m to the top of Yarlside at 639m. AOD

.) From the top of Yarlside retrace your steps back to the intake wall at map ref. SD693798. At the wall turn left to follow a narrow path contouring around Yarlside for about 1.3km to the Saddle between Yarlside and Kensgriff. From the saddle head northeast directly up to the top of Kensgriff (574m) at map ref. SD688992.

.) From the top of Kensgriff at map ref. SD688992 head north east down the ridge to the saddle between Kensgriff and Randygill Top at map ref. SD691998. From this saddle head north east for about 600m to another saddle at the north eastern end of the ridge from Randygill Top at map ref. NY692004. At this saddle turn sharp left to follow the ridge for about 700m to the cairns at Randygill Top (map ref. NY686000).

.) From the cairns at Randygill Top head roughly north westerly down the spur of the hill to the confluence of Leath Gill with Bowderdale Beck at map ref. NY678006. Cross Bowderdale Beck and about 100m west of the beck join the bridleway along the bottom of Bowderdale. At the bridleway turn left to head south along the bridleway for about 1.7km to map ref. SD677988.

.) At map ref. SD677988 the bridleway that has been following Bowderdale Beck upstream along Bowderdale begins to veer away from the beck to climb up the hillside. Our route continues to follow the beck along a narrow little path off the bridleway to the left. Continue to follow the beck for another 1km to Bowderdale Head at map ref. SD681980 about 200m beyond the start of the beck.

.) At Bowderdale Head at map ref. SD681980 the path starts to make a steep descent with Cautley Spout waterfall a few hundred metres away to the right. After about 600m at the bottom of the steepest part of the descent the path reaches Cautley Holme Beck. Continue on the path by the beck for about 1km to the bridleway beside the River Rawthey at map ref. SD693968. Follow the bridleway back to the footbridge over the River Rawthey and cross it to return to the lay-by next to the Cross Keys and the end of the walk.
