1.) Start at The parking area at map ref. SD288970 at the end of the minor road climbing south west from Coniston around the base of Coniston Old Man. From the car park follow the track that is the continuation of the road around the base of Coniston Old Man. The track is called Walna Scar Road. Follow this track for a little over 3km to map ref. SD258964 on the col between Brown Pike and Walna Scar.

2.) At the col between Brown Pike and Walna Scar turn right to climb up to the summit of Brown Pike along the footpath. Continue on the path along the ridge over Buck Pike and over Dow Crag to drop down to Goat Hawse at map ref. SD266982. Continue along the path climbing up towards the ridge of Coniston Old Man. About 200m from Goat Hawse take the right hand fork in the path to climb up to the ridge and continue along the ridge to the summit of Coniston Old Man(803m AOD).

3.) From the summit trig point on Coniston Old Man, head back, northwards, along the ridge and continue following the path over Swirl Band to Swirl How at map ref. NY272005. At Swirl How turn right and follow the path down prison Band to Swirl Hawse at map ref. NY278007.

4.) At Swirl Hawse turn right and follow the path dropping down to Levers Water reservoir. At the corner of the reservoir (map ref. SD281992) turn right and follow an informal path along the south eastern edge of the reservoir to map ref. SD279990.

5.) At the corner of the reservoir, map ref. SD279990, turn left and follow the public footpath down Boulder Valley and around the hillside to Crowberry Haws (map ref. SD284981). From here take the public footpath southwards contouring across the base of Coniston Old Man back to the car park and the end of the walk.
