Library Route No. 930305
A171 Coast Road lay-by, Stoup Beck, Robin Hood's Bay,
Hawsker, Biller Howe Dale circuit - 27km
North York Moors . . .

Map: OS Explorer OL27 North York Moors Eastern area

General Directions (see markers on the route map)

Point 1.) Start at the large lay-by off the A171 coast road at map ref. NZ943002 about 1.5km east of the Flask Inn. From the lay-by cross the A171 and follow the Lyke Way Walk route across the moor for 2.5km to the trig point at map ref NZ969011 near the radio mast above Ravenscar. Just beyond the trig point turn left at the road and follow the road down hill for about 2.5km to join the Cleveland way route at Stoupe Beck.

Point 2.) From Stoup Beck, map ref. NZ957035, it is possible to walk along the beach to Robin Hood's bay at low water, otherwise the route follows the Cleveland Way coastal path for about 3.5km past Robin Hood's Bay to a little gulley called Rain Dale at map ref. NZ952070, owned by the National Trust. Here the route turns left to follow a permissive path up Rain Dale to join the path and cycleway along the disused coastal railway bed at map ref. NZ951069.

Point 3.) The route follows the railway path for about 2km to a farm track crossing the railway path at map ref. NZ934078. Here the route turns left to follow the farm track from Hawsker Bottoms for 350m out to the road (B1447). Continue along the road for almost 400m to a right hand bend and there turn left off the B1447 to follow a minor road to a crossroads on the A171. Cross the A171 and continue along the minor road to cross Mitten Hill Beck/ Intake Beck. Continue for a further kilometre round a left hand bend to a sharp right hand bend at map ref. NZ916062. Here turn left off the minor road on the crown of the bend on to a farm access track, fenced between hedges.

Point 4.) After about 500m at the end of the fenced track continue along a public footpath for about 2km to the B1416 at map ref. NZ907040. Cross the road and continue along the public footpath for almost 1.5km to the corner of a forestry plantation. Continue along a track for another kilometre to map ref. NZ899017. Here on the left is a shallow depression in the ground which develops into the little valley of Biller Howe Dale. Turn left to follow the public footpath down Biller Howe dale. At first the path is not well defined but it gradually develops and by the time the path enters the woodland at map ref. NZ910018, it is clearly defined.

Point 5.) Follow the path through pleasant broadleaf woodland along Biller Howe Dale and from the end of the woodland continue along the path following Brown Rigg Beck across marshy ground for abut 2km to map ref. NZ930994. This is about 100m before the route of the Lyke Wake Walk crosses the valley. Here turn left to follow a public footpath up a side valley to the north western end of the lay-by where the route started and turn right to walk along the lay-by and complete the walk.
