General Directions (see markers on the route map)

.) Start the walk at the Saltergate car park map ref.SE 852937, above the Hole-of-Horcum on the A169 Pickering to Whitby road. Follow the road down towards the hairpin bend. After 300m take the public footpath on the right into the woodland. Follow the path down the slope to the road near the old Saltergate Inn. Cross the road and take the footpath past Glebe Farm and across the moor above Havern Beck to the edge of Pifelhead Wood. Continue on the moor around the edge of the escarpment along Yewtree Scar above the wood to the gully at Hudsons Cross at map ref. SE838946.

.) At Hudsons Cross turn right to make the steep descent down the gully into Newtondale. At the bottom of the descent cross Pickering Beck and turn left to walk along the bank of the beck past Newtondale Halt on the North York Moors railway. Immediately past the halt, turn right to pass under the railway and after about 100m join the stony forestry access road along Newtondale. At the access road turn left to walk along the forestry access road for about 800m to an access road forking right to climb up the hillside to a picnic area at Raper's Farm.

.) Follow the road past the farm around a right hand hair pin bend. Just round the bend take the footpath off the road to the left into the woodland to cross the head of a small valley and climb up to the access road at map ref. SE818941. Turn left onto the access road and follow it past Raindale Head to map ref. SE800938. Here turn left off the access road on to a path through the woodland and then across the fields past Over Blow farm to Middle Head farm and continue along the path through the forest across a little valley to join the route of the Tabular Hills Walk across Stony Moor. Cross the beck (Rygate Slack) and follow the path up through the woodland to Newton-under-Rawcliffe.

.) Follow the road into the village and opposite the duck pond take the path down the side of the pub (The White Swan), past the pub's caravan site, across a track and down the muddy hillside to Levisham Station. From the station follow the road up the hill and take the footpath off to the right cutting out the hair pin bend in the road. Continue on the path climbing up the hillside to Dundale Pond at map ref. SE828918.

.) From Dundale Pond follow the stony moorland track heading north east past Seavy Pond and around the Hole-of Horcum to the hair pin bend known as the Devil's Elbow on the A169 at Saltergate. At the road turn right to walk on the roadside verge back to the car park and the end of the walk.
