Library Route 930820
A171 coast road, Jugger Howe Beck,
Lilla Howe circuit - 16km
North York Moors . . .

Map: OS Explorer OL27 North York Moors Eastern area at 1:25000

General Directions (see markers on the route map)

1.) Start from the long lay-by off the A171 at map ref. NZ944002 about 1.5km south east of the Flask Inn and about 3km north west of the Falcon Inn. Walk north west along the lay-by (it's a length of the old coast road no longer used after the A171 was realigned). After about 350m turn left off the lay-by road on to a footpath across the fields with the little valley of Burn Howe Dale below on the left. About 1.4km from the lay-by the path crosses the beck called Jugger Howe Beck downstream and called Brown Rigg Beck upstream of here.

2.) Just across the beck turn right to follow the path heading upstream along the western bank of the beck. After about 1.5km the path crossed a farm access road and continues for another 200m to the start of woodland. Follow the path by the beck winding along Biller Howe Dale and through the woodland for about 1.2km to the end of the woodland.

3.) From the end of the woodland continue westwards along a shallow valley where the path in not well defined. After about 1km, at map ref. NZ899017, the route reaches a track with a forestry plantation about 100m beyond. At the track turn left to follow the track generally southwards for a little over 3km to the stone cross on Lilla Howe at map ref. SE889986. (This track is called the Robin Hood's Bay Road - part of the old packhorse route used to transport salt across the moors to Saltergate and beyond)

4.) At Lilla Howe turn left to follow the route of the Lyke Wake Walk heading generally eastwards for about 4.2km to Jugger Howe Beck at map ref. SE930993. It's a steep descent down to the beck and once across the beck there's a steep climb up to an old war time military concrete road on Jugger Howe Moor. Follow the concrete road for about 1.3km back to the lay-by off the A171 and the end of the walk.
