General Directions (see markers on the route map)

1.) Start at the small informal lay-by opposite Scugdale Hall at map ref. NZ 518 001 in Scugdale at the northern edge of the North York Moors. From the lay-by follow the bridleway northeast up to Barker's Crags. The lay-by and the bridleway are used by climbers to access the practice climbs on Barker's Crags. Continue through the crags across the open moor to Brian's Pond at map ref. NZ 522 007.

2.) Briefly join the track passing Brian's Pond and at the pond bear right off the track to follow a footpath down the moor towards Raisedale. After about 600m at map ref.NZ 528 010, at the intake wall join the walled track heading initially northwards and continue allong the track around a 180degree turn around the edge of a conifer plantation and down the hillside to cross Raisedale Beck at map ref. NZ 531 009. Once across the beck turn right to follow the beck downstream to Raisedale Mill. Go through the mill yard and up the track to the road at map ref. NZ 539 005.

3.) At the road turn right and walk along the road for about 500m to a narrow lane on the left. At this junction turn left and walk along the lane past Stone Intake farm, then Cold Moor Cote where the public road ends. Continue along the access track past Beak Hills farm and continue to interesct the Cleveland Way path at map ref. NZ 546 033.

4.) At the Cleveland way turn left to follow the Cleveland Way up on to Cringle Moor and across Cringle Moor to the Alec Falconer memorial seat at the view point at map ref. NZ 535 033. From the view point continue along the Cleveland Way route down to the Lord Stone's Cafe by the road at map ref. NZ 524 030.

5.) From the cafe rejoin the Cleveland Way route and follow it up to the glider club field on top of Carlton Moor. Still following the Cleveland Way continue across carlton Moor for about 3km to the end of the ridge and follow the path down from the moor, through some woodland. Continue along the path around the bottom edge of the woodland to the road at Heathwaite Green, map ref. NZ 492 007.

6.) At the road turn left to leave the route of the Cleveland way and walk along the road up Scugdale for about 3km back to the lay-by at Scugdale Hall and the end of the walk.
