R. Derwent, Langdale Rigg, Langdale End, Broxa circuit
19km - North York Moors . . .

General Directions (see markers on the route map)

1.) The route starts at a road junction in Hackness at map ref. SE968906 where there is a parking strip marked at the roadside. Hackness is about 4km west of Scalby, a village on the northern edge of Scarborough. From the junction head roughly westwards along the lane following Lowdales Beck upstream for about 1.7km to Lowdales Farm at map ref. SE953915. Here ignore the road to the left and continue straight ahead past the farm following a public bridleway along a farm track heading upstream by Lowdales Beck through Low Dales and then by Whisperdales Beck through Whisperdales for about 2km from Lowdales farm to the edge of the conifer plantation on Silpho Moor. Continue along the bridleway climbing up through the plantation for about 1km to Reasty Road and cross the road to the view point at the top of Reasty Bank, map ref. SE965944.

2.) From the view point cross back over Reasty Road and follow the bridleway westwards along a forestry access track on the top of the bank through the conifer plantation. Continue along the forestry access road for about 2.5km to a sharp left hand bend in the forestry road at Barns Cliff End. After another 250m now heading southwards along the forestry road, turn right almost doubling back on a public footpath heading northwest steeply down the side of the River Derwent valley. Continue down this path for about 700m to a footbridge over Harwood Dale Beck at map ref. SE936950. The footbridge is about 100m upstream of the confluence of Harwood Dale Beck and the River Derwent.

3.) Cross the footbridge over Harwood Dale Beck and continue straight ahead along a track through the woodland for about 800m to a ford across the now tiny River Derwent at map ref. SE934957. From the ford continue along the track west for about 50m then south west climbing up the hillside through the conifer plantation to pass around High Langdale End farm. Continue along the track around the edge of the forest with a triangulation pillar to the left in the open field beyond the edge of the forest. About 200m beyond the trig point take the public footpath across the open field and then back into the forest along Langdale Rigg for about 3km almost to Howden Hill where the path turns righ to join the road at map ref. SE935916. Turn left at the road and follow it through the hamlet of Langdale End to the road bridge over the River Derwent at map ref. SE942909.

4.) Just across the road bridge over the River Derwent turn left to follow a public footpath climbing steeply up the hillside to the road at the edge of Broxa. Walk through the village along the road. Then at the edge of the village turn right to walk along the farm access track at map ref. SE946915. After about 150m the track turns sharp left. Here continue straigh ahead along a public footpath across the fields. The start of the path can be very muddy where the dairy cattle herd tramples the gateway. Continue along this footpath around the edge of the fields next to the woodland for about 1.5km from Broxa. Here the footpath crosses the field from the woodland to the left of the path to the woodland on the right of the path. The path then enters the woodland and descends through the woodland to the road at map ref. SE967902 on the edge of Hackness village. At the road turn left and walk along the road for about 400m back to the starting point and the end of the walk.
