Wykeham Forest, North York Moors . . .

General Directions (see markers on the route map)

1.) Start on the village main street near the church in Hutton Buscel at map ref. SE972841. There's room to park on the road side here. Hutton Buscel is off the A170 Pickering to Scarborough road a little over 1km southwest of the road bridge over the River Derwent between West & East Ayton. Walk north east along the village street for 650m to a narrow turning on the left. (this is about 50m before the village street makes a sharp right hand turn). Walk along this lane for about 250m and at a gentle left hand bend in the lane turn right off the lane on to a bridleway across the fields for about 600m to a minor road at map ref. SE981852. At the road turn right and walk along the road for about 350m to a crossroads.

2.) At the crossroads, keep straight ahead for another 150m to a turning on the left on to a service road in front of a row of stone terrace houses. Follow the service road past the row of houses and continue from the end of the service road along a foorpath across the fields with the ruins of Ayton Castle (map ref. SE987851) on the left of the path. Continue along the path as it bends round to head generally northwards beside the River Derwent.. The path soon becomes a substantial boardwalk along the riverside through the woodland of Forge Valley. After about 2km the boardwalk ends where the path emerges from the woodland to continue across the fields for another 1.5km to a minor road at Cockrah House farm.

3.) From Crockrah House farm follow the road for another 300m through the hamlet of Wrench Green to a sharp left and turn on to a tarmac lane at map ref. SE965894. Follow the lane now called "Lang Gate" climbing steeply up along the edge of the conifer plantation (part of Wykeham Forest). From Wrench Green our route has been following the route of the Tabular Hills Walk. From the top of the climb continue along the forest access tracks still on the Tabular Hills route for about 1.3km to the view point at Highwood Brow. Here the forest access track joins a minor public road.

4.) At Highwood Brow view point turn left to follow the public road for about 2.3km almost to Wykeham Moor Cottages. About 200m before the cottages turn right on to a bridleway along a field edge and down into the wooded valley of Sawdon Beck. At the beck turn left off the bridleway to follow a public footpath beside the beck. All the paths here seem to be very muddy particularly the well used bridleways. After about 700m following the beck take the path on the right to climb up to a track to the road in Sawdon village at map ref. SE942850.

5.) At the road in Sawdon village turn left and walk along the road for about 200m to a right hand bend in the road. On the bend keep straight on to leave the road and follow a track between the fields called Sawdon Balk. About 500m along this track just after a right angle left turn then a right angle right turn take the bridleway off the track to the left heading down to cross sawdon Beck, and the follow the beck for about 700m to a minor road at map ref. SE958838. At the road turn left and after about 100m along the road turn right off the road to follow a bridleway along the edge of a field for about 500m to another minor road. At this road turn right for about 100m then turn left off the road to follow a bridleway along a track between the fields for about 700m to another minor road at map ref. SE970844. At this road turn right and follow the road for about 300m back to the starting point in Hutton Buscel and the end of the walk.
