General Directions (see markers on the route map)

1.) Start at road junction at map ref. NZ710055, next to Slate Hill House in Little Fryup Dale. There is room to park off the road here. From the road junction follow the public bridleway heading northwards climbing diagonally up the hillside onto the moor called Ainthorpe Rigg. Cross the moor with its ancient earthworks and stones and continue along the bridleway dropping down to the road above Ainthorpe village. Follow the road down into the village past the Fox & Hounds Inn with the quoits court on the green opposite.

2.) Pass the house next door to the Fox & Hounds Inn and then turn right through a gate onto a green track heading generally east for about 1km. Here turn left for about 150m to the road at map ref. NZ711078 next to Kadelands House. Turn right and walk along the road for about 300m. Here turn left off the road to follow the route of the Esk Valley Walk on a public footpath along a track across the field to the railway line. Cross the railway and continue along the route of the Esk Valley Walk to the road at map ref. NZ717083. At the road turn left and walk along the road for about 100m to the entrance to the North York Moors Danby Visitor Centre. It's well worth a visit to see the current exhibition & visitor facilities.

3.) From the Visitor Centre return to the road and go to the road junction above the centre. At the junction turn right and walk along the road heading generally eastwards for about 1.7km to map ref. NZ733084. Here turn right off the road on to a public footpath along a track heading directly down the hillside for about 500m to a road on the edge of Houlsyke. At the road turn left to walk along the road through Houlsyke for about 600m. Here turn right off the road to follow a footpath along the edge of a field to the railway. Follow the path across the railway. Continue across a field to a footbridge over the River Esk and along a track to the road at map ref. NZ738072. The bridleway climbs up the hillside, around an old quarry site to the edge of woodland beside Head House farm. Continue along the bridleway past the farm and along the woodland edge above Danby Crag. About 1km beyond Head House farm the bridleway enters an area of open access land. Follow the bridleway through the open access land and down past Walkers Plantation to a walled track down the hillside and out to a road at map ref. NZ715052, above Stonebeck Lane Farm. At the road turn right and walk along the road past Sonebeck Lane Farm and back to the road junction where the walk started to complete the route.
