North York Moors . . .

General Directions (see markers on the route map)

1.) Start at Moor Gate, map ref. SE540917, where there is a small parking area just past the cattle grid, off the Hawnby to Osmotherly road about 2km north of Hawnby village. From this parking area follow the stony track heading northwards for a little over 4km to the Bilsdale TV Mast. Use the track that detours to the left towards the mast and then back again. The public footpath straight on is often very boggy indeed and can be hard to find. Continue to follow the track along the moorland ridge for a little over 2km from the TV mast to Cock Howe. This is an ancient burial mound with a more recent (C18) boundary stone on top.

2.) At Cock Howe turn left and follow the path across the moor to Head House at map ref. SE534971. It's a reasonably well defined path but it starts at Cock Howe and not about 100m before Cock Howe as shown on the OS map. The path approaches Head House around the walls enclosing a few fields next to the house. Head House is now a refuge for grouse shooting parties to have their lunch. From Head House follow the track across the valley and up onto Cow Ridge. Continue along Cow Ridge for around 2km passing on the left Scotland Farm to a minor road at map ref. SE526939.

3.) At the road turn left and walk down the road for abou 800m to a double bend leading down to a beck. At the first bend keep straight on along the access track to a farm and continue along the footpath beyond the farm down across the fields to cross a beck. Continue along the path following the beck downstream and then climbing up a little to follow the path through Green's Wood to Brewster Hill farm. From the farm continue along the path for about 1km almost to the house called Harker Gates.

4.) About 100m before Harker gates turn left off the track and follow the path across the fields for about 250m to join another farm access track at map ref. SE528913. At this track turn right and walk along the track for about 200m to a sharp right hand bend. At the bend keep straight on to follow a path along the field edge with a good view of Hawnby Hill away to the left. The path becomes a farm track and after about 500m (map ref. SE530907) turn left off the track to follow a path by the stream for about 100m to the River Rye. At the river turn left and follow the path along the river bank for about 150m to a footbridge. Cross the footbridge and follow the path up the valley side past the side of Hill End House to a track at map ref. SE536910. At the track turn left and follow the track for about 700m back to Moor Gate and the end of the walk.
