General Directions (see markers on the route map)

Note: the paths across the open moor to Scaling Dam Reservoir and back are ill defined. A detailed map & compass or GPS is needed to provide reliable navigation.

1.) Start at the car park, map ref. NZ763076, near the road bridge over the River Esk in Lealholm. From the car park take the bridleway following the river downstream between the river and the railway. Continue for a kilometer to Underpark Farm and follow the bridleway under the railway and continue to the road at Hill House Farm. At the road turn left and walk along the road for about 300m to a public footpath on the right hand side of the road. Turn off the road to follow this footpath heading generally northwards past Lealholm Hall (about 300m to the left (west) of the path). Continue along the path for a little over a kilometer to the road at map ref. NZ774089 near Stonegate.

2.) At the road turn left and walk along the road for about 250m to a wide stony track on the right hand side of the road. Turn right off the road to follow this track across Lealholm Rigg for about 1km to map ref. NZ762091, where there is a public bridleway on the right of the track. (Note: the paths across the open moor to Scaling Dam Reservoir and back are ill defined. A detailed map & compass or GPS is needed to provide reliable navigation.) Turn right to follow the route of the bridleway across the open moor for about 2.6km to map ref. NZ747112. Bear right here to follow the route of a public footpath for about 800m to map ref. NZ745120. Here the public footpath turns left but our route continues straight ahead on a water company permissive path to the edge of Scaling Dam Reservoir.

3.) At the edge of the reservoir turn right to continue along the permissive path around the reservoir to the car park at the eastern end of the reservoir. (At weekends and at other busy times there is usually a caravan providing hot food and drinks here) From this car park & picnic area continue along the permissive path to walk along the crest of the dam to the car park at the western end of the reservoir. To the west of the car park the permissive path links up with the public bridleway along the track at the western boundary of the reservoir site. At the bridleway turn left to walk south along the track for about 300m to a track on the right called Quarry Road. Turn right to follow the bridleway along the Quarry Road for about 250m to a public footpath on the left of the track.

4.) (Note: the paths across the open moor to Scaling Dam Reservoir and back are ill defined. A detailed map & compass or GPS is needed to provide reliable navigation.) Turn left off the Quarry Road to follow the route of the public footpath heading roughly south west for about 650m to join a public footpath at map ref. NZ732116, heading roughly southwards towards Danby Beacon. Follow the route of this footpath for about 2km to the road at map ref. NZ731097 and follow the road for a further 500m to Danby Beacon.

5.) At Danby Beacon turn left to follow the wide stony track across Lealholm Moor for about 2.8km to a fork in the track. Take the right hand fork for about 400m to the road at map ref. NZ763087. Follow the road for about 1km down the hillside back to the car park near the river in Lealholm and the end of the walk.
