Clay Bank, Cleveland Way, Bloworth Crossing,
Bank Foot, Greenhow Plantation circuit - 19km
North York Moors . . .

Map: OS Explorer OL26 North York Moors Western area at 1:25000

General Directions (see markers on the route map)

1.) Start at the car park & view point off the B1257 at the top of Clay Bank about 3.5km southeast of Great Broughton, at map ref. NZ572035. From the car park walk along the road (B1257) for about 300m to the point where the Cleveland Way route crosses the road at map ref. NZ572033. Turn left off the road to follow the Cleveland Way route climbing onto Carr Ridge. Continue along the Cleveland Way to pass the trig point on Round Hill on the left at map ref. NZ594015, about 2.5km from the road. This is the highest point on the North York Moors at 454m AOD. Continue along the Cleveland Way for another 2km to Bloworth Crossing on the old ironstone railway at map ref. NZ615015.

2.) At Bloworth Crossing turn left still following the Cleveland Way. After another kilometre the track passes the top of Ingleby Incline, an interesting feature of the ironstone railway. From Incline Top follow the Cleveland Way route for another 2.5km to a fork in the track at map ref. NZ601050. Here the Cleveland way follows the right hand fork, but our route leaves the Cleveland Way and follows the left hand fork. About 1km northwards from the fork in the track the track begins a zig-zag descent of the escarpment to a few houses at Bank Foot, map ref. NZ592061.

3.) At Bank Foot turn left to follow the track along the bottom edge of the wooded escarpment. This track is the continuation of the old ironstone railway bed from the bottom of Ingleby Incline heading for Battersby and on to the iron smelting sites on Teesside. Follow this track for 2.5km from Bank Foot to the bottom of Ingleby Incline at map ref. NZ600034. Continue along the forestry access track for almost another 1km to a point about 100m beyond Ingleby Beck at map ref. NZ601025.

4.) About 100m beyond Ingleby Beck turn left to climb steeply up the hillside keeping to the west of the beck for about 350m almost to the top edge of the forestry. Follow the path around the top edge of the forestry site passing the shale out crop at Botton Head. About 1km after Botton Head the footpath becomes a forestry track which continues for another 2km to drop down to the road (B1257) at map ref. NZ572034. At the road turn right and walk along the road for about 200m back to the Clay Bank car park and the end of the walk.
