1.) Start at the public car park (where there are public toilets) at the village hall on the southern edge of Chop Gate at map ref. SE559993 off the B1257. Leave the car park along the path heading south west over a bridge across Raisedale Beck. Follow this path climbing up the hillside for about 1.8km to Cock Howe at map ref. SE542983. From Cock Howe turn right and follow the moorland track for almost 2km to a junction in the tracks at map ref. NZ527001. Just ahead at this point is a line of crags called Barker's Crags.

2.) Take the path heading north west through Barker's Crags and continue past Brian's Pond. Continue along the moorland track from Brian's Pond to climb up across Bilsdale West Moor and cross the runways of the now defunct Carlton Gliding Club to join the Cleveland Way at map ref. NZ521028. Follow the Cleveland Way down to the road at the top of Carlton Bank.

3.) Continue on the Cleveland Way past Lord Stones Cafe to climb up to the Alec Falconer memorial seat at the start of the ridge of Cringle Moor. Continue along the Cleveland Way across Cringle Moor and down to the saddle between the moors before climbing up on to Cold Moor. Again the Cleveland Way drops down to a saddle before climbing up through the Wain Stones and crossing Hast Bank. Continue along the Cleveland Way to drop down to cross the road (B1257) at map ref. NZ573033.

4.) From the road continue along the Cleveland Way to climb up to the trig point on Round Hill at map ref. NZ594015, above Botton Head. This is the highest point on the North York Moors at 454m AOD. From Round Hill leave the Cleveland Way and follow track across Urra Moor to the earthwork around the edge of the valley side overlooking Bilsdale. Follow the path and then a moorland track around the edge of the valley for about 1.7km to map ref. SE579992.

5.) At map ref. SE579992 turn right off the track to go through a wooden field gate off the open moor and into some rough sheep pasture. Follow the path down the hillside to join a walled farm access track passing William Beck Farm and leading down to the road (B1257) at map ref. SE561991. At the road turn right and walk along the road for about 250m to the entrance to the public car park at the Chop Gate village Hall and the end of the walk.
