Route No. 951021
Ralph Cross, Esklets, Westerdale, Broad Gate Fm,
Castleton Rigg, Fat Betty circuit - 14km
North York Moors . . .

Map: OS Explorer OL26 North York Moors Eastern area

1.) Start at the little gravel parking area at map ref. NZ677018 at Rosedale Head about 200m south of Young Ralph Cross. From the car park follow the road southwards, heading towards the Lion Inn on Blakey Ridge, for about 650m to map ref. NZ675012. This is the point where the old route of the Lyke Wake Walk came up from Esklets and crossed the road to continue across Rosedale Head. Turn right off the road here and follow the path down to the confluence of moorland streams that come together to form the River Esk, and join the route of the Esk Valley Walk at map ref. NZ656015.

2.) Follow the route of the Esk Valley Walk downstream for about 4km past Wood End and New House Farm to map ref. NZ654051, about 400m beyond New House Farm. Turn right here to walk along a minor road for about 1.5km to a road junction in Westerdale village at map ref. NZ664058.

3.) At the junction turn right and walk along the road for about 120m to a minor road on the left. At the junction turn left off the road and follow the path diagonally across the fields to Broad Gate Road. At the road turn right and follow the road to Broad Gate Farm. Continue through Broad Gate Farm and follow the bridleway along a track across the fields to a bridge over Tower Beck. Continue along the bridleway climbing up to Dale Head farm. (Note the stone shelf for the old "skep" type of bee hives on the left as you reach Dale Head farm) Continue past Dale Head farm climbing up across the moor to the road at map ref. NZ682040.

4.) At the road on Castleton Rigg turn right and walk along the road for about 1.2km where the road bends to the right. Keep left off the road here as the road bends to the right and follow the path along a line of boundary stones for about 800m to another minor road. Just before reaching the road there is a large square boundary stone with a white painted stone ball on top. This boundary stone is called White Cross on the map but is known locally as "Fat Betty". At the road turn right and follow the road for about 450m back to the parking area at the end of the walk.
