A171 coast road, Stoup Beck, Robin Hoods Bay, Fylingthorpe, Biller Howe Dale, Jugger Howe Beck circuit - 21km
North York Moors . . .

Map: OS Explorer OL27 North York Moors Eastern area

General Directions (see markers on the route map)

1.) Start at the long lay-by off the A171 coast road at map ref. NZ944002 on the route of the Lyke Wake Walk. The lay-by is a length of the old road left when the new road alignment was constructed. From the lay-by cross the A171 and take the path opposite for about 2.5km to a minor road by the radio mast above Ravenscar (map ref. NZ969012).

2.) At the road by the radio mast turn left and follow the road down to Stoup Beck Farm. If the tides are right you can walk along the beach to the slipway at Robin Hood's Bay (map ref. NZ953048). (Note: the rising tide first cuts off the beach route at the little headland on the north side of Mill Beck at Boggle Hole) If the tide is not suitable for the beach route, then from Stoup Beck Farm (or from Boggle Hole) follow the route of the Cleveland Way along the top of the low clay cliffs to Robin Hood's Bay.

3.) From the top of the slipway at Robin Hood's Bay turn left along a narrow lane between the buildings (sign post for the Cleveland Way) At the end of the lane in a rough yard turn right ( if you are coming along the Cleveland Way turn left onto this path) and follow the path climbing up around the field edges to the path/cycle route along the disused coastal railway bed at Middlewood Farm (map ref. NZ945046). At the railway path turn right and walk along the railway path for about 100m then take the public footpath off the railway path on the left. After about 150m the path makes a sharp left hand turn and after another 100m the path comes out on to Middlewood Lane. At Middlewood Road turn right and walk along the road for about 150m to a junction. Turn left here and follow the road up the hill along Sled Gates passing Sled Gates Farm on the left then Park Gate Farm on the right and continue straight on along the road up hill to the A171 (Robin Hood's Bay Road) at map ref. NZ922045. Cross the main road and take the public bridleway along a track opposite down the right hand side of the road signs and through a wooden field gate. Follow the track and ignore the bridleway where it turns left off the track. Continue along the track for about 650m from the road to map ref. NZ917047 and here turn left to follow a public footpath to the B1416 at map ref. NZ909039.

4.) At the road (B1416) turn right and walk along the road for about 200m then turn left off the road to follow a public footpath through a wooden field gate and across the open moor to a stand of trees. The path goes through the trees and continues heading southwards along the edge of the moorland next to a large conifer plantation (Shooting House Rigg). About 2.3km from the road, at map ref. NZ899017, there is a depression in the moor on the left that deepens to become Biller Howe Dale.

5.) About 2.3km from the road, at map ref. NZ899017, there is a depression in the moor on the left that deepens to become Biller Howe Dale. Turn left here and follow a feint path down this little valley. After about 1.1km there is a little wooden pedestrian gate into the woodland in Biller Howe Dale t map ref. NZ910018. Continue along the path down the valley to cross a farm access road at map ref. NZ919008. Continue along the path following the stream called Brown Rigg Beck for about 1.5km to map ref. SE930994. Turn left here to cross the beck, now called Jugger Howe Beck. Follow the path above Burn Howe Dale for a little over 1km back to the long lay-by off the A171 coast road where the walk started and return to your vehicle and the end of the walk.
