General Directions

The walk starts at a little lay-by on the right hand side of the road at a sharp left hand bend as the road leaves the eastern end of Boltby village at map ref. SE 494 865. From the lay-by follow the road back (westwards) through the village for about 600m to the access track to West Gurtoft Farm at the western edge of the village (map ref. SE 488 866).

Turn right off the road and follow the public footpath along the farm access track and then out across the fields to the north of the farm heading for Gurtof Wood, part of Boltby Forest. Continue along the footpath into the wood. There is a public footpath through the forest shown on the OS map but it's open access woodland and I prefer to follow the forest access tracks heading north west to zig-zag across West Moor Slack and then follow a well used route up along a firebreak to the bridleway at Seta Pike.

Follow the bridleway around the edge of Boltby Forest with the open moor to the left. The bridleway leaves the forest at map ref. SE 484 899 and continues climbing up across the open moor to a gate opening onto the Hambleton Drove Road at map ref. SE 488 909. Follow the old drove road northwards for about 400m then turn right off the drove road and follow the track heading south eastwards for about 2.3km to map ref. SE 511 904.

Turn right here to follow a bridleway along another track for about 1km to the head of Gower Dale. Turn left here and take the public footpath heading down through the forest into Gower Dale for about 2km to the cottage called Gowerdale House (in a bad state of repair last time I saw it). In front of the cottage cross the stream and follow the bridleway straight up the hillside for about 500m to the ruined house at Noddle End.

From Noddle End continue along the bridleway for about 2.2km to the Hambleton Drove Road at map ref. SE 504 889. Cross the Drove Road and follow the Cleveland Way route along the farm access road past High Paradise Farm. Continue along the Cleveland Way following the farm access road to the sharp right hand bend in the road above Low Paradise Farm at map ref. SE 504 883. Keep straight on at the bend leaving the road and follow the Cleveland Way route contouring around the wooded hillside for about 1.3km to the road at Sneck Yate Bank, map ref. SE 507 875.

Continue along the Cleveland Way route for another kilometer to High Barn. By the barn turn right and follow a bridleway along a zig-zag route down the steep hillside for about 850m to a T-junction in the bridleways at map ref. SE 500 866. Keep straight on here and follow a public footpath on the left hand side of the field boundary dropping down along the edge of the fields to Lunshaw Beck. Cross the beck and continue along the public footpath climbing up the field to the road at the lay-by on the edge of Boltby and the end of the walk.
