Map: OS Explorer OL24 The Peak District White Peak area at 1:25000

General Directions (see markers on the route map)

1.) Start at the public car park in Wetton village at map ref. SK109552. From the car park take the public footpath from the north west corner of the car park. Follow the path along a farm access track for about 350m to a minor road at map ref. SK107553. At the road turn left and walk along the road for about 150m to a junction. At the junction keep right and follow the road for about 100m past the signs warning of a weak bridge at Wetton Mill. Just beyond the signs is a farm access track on the left and just beyond that is a field gate with a stone step stile next to it. Cross the stile and follow the public footpath down a small, steep valley to the River Manifold at map ref. SK098551. Ahead there is a bridge over the river, but it's worth making a short diversion following the river ban downstream to Thors Cave, a huge gaping cavern in the valley side above the river.

2.) When you've explored the cave return to the bridge and cross the River Manifold. Cross the tarmac cycleway and follow the public footpath climbing up a side valley through Ladyside Wood. Continue along this path for about 1.3km from the river until you reach a minor road in the village of Grindon. At the road turn right and walk along the road for about 150m to the entrance to the churchyard on the right at a sharp left hand bend in the road. Walk through the churchyard to a small car park and picnic area on a minor road heading out of the village.

3.) About 450m along the lane from the car park turn left to follow a bridleway across the fields for about 120m then turn right to follow a footpath across the fields for about 130m to rejoin the track heading towards Wettonmill. Continue past Ossoms Hill farm and follow the footpath down the steep valley side to cross Hoo Brook and join a minor road on the edge of Wettonmill at map ref. SK094560. At the road turn right and follow the road to the bridge over the River Manifold.

4.) Cross the bridge over the River Manifold and turn right to follow the route of the Manifold Way for about 150m. Then turn left off the Manifold Way route to follow a footpath along the bottom of a steep sided narrow valley for about 800m almost to Manor House farm. About 100m before reaching Manor House farm turn right at map ref. SK104566 and follow the footpath climbing up the hillside. Continue along this path skirting around Wetton Hill and then dropping down into Wetton village. At the road in Wetton turn right and walk south west along the road for about 130m to the footpath on the left that leads across the fields back to the car park where the walk started.
