Solar Eclipse, Saturday 30 May 2003
Scarborough
Yorkshire Coast

Waiting for the eclipsed sun to riseThis morning the alarm went off at 2.40am and at 3.10 a family party of half a dozen of us set off for Scarborough. As we drove through Malton the sky seemed to be quite light and we were getting worried that we had got the times wrong. We arrived on the front in Scarborough at around 4.15am and it was hard to find a parking spot. We found a place to watch from on the south cliff and there was already a group of a couple of dozen people and many other similar groups all along the sea front. From our vantage point we could see people strung out all around the south bay. Several small boats put out from the harbour and moored in the bay and at about 4.50am there was the first tiny sliver of red light as the eclipsed sun began to show over the horizon through the morning mist. What a amazing sight! The red light gradually shaped into a crescent that grew slowly wider until at about 5.30am the eclipse was over completely and it looked as though we were in for a fine warm sunny day. Anyone waking up at a normal breakfast time would never know what a marvellous sight they had missed. After a quick picnic breakfat on the sea front we drove home and heard a dramatic report of the eclipse on Radio York.

Progress of the eclipse from 4.54am to 5.25am
