Ebor Way route marker

The River Rye
This street is on the route of the Ebor Way (a long distance route of 112km
from Helmsley to Ilkley via York). After about 150m, at map ref. SE615836, we turned
right on to a tarmac access road, still following the Ebor Way route.
The Ebor Way route led us through an industrial estate for almost 500m
to a sawmill at map ref. SE618832. At the side of the sawmill we came
through a gate into the fields by the River Rye.
|
This week, my neighbour, Jim, and I have both had grandad duties that
have stopped us walking. This afternoon we both managed to get a special
dispensation for a short local walk. We drove to Helmsley and parked
near the town centre. From the marked square we walked along the main
road (A170) towards the bridge over the River Rye. Just before the bridge
we turned left along a street called Ryegate.

About 2km. from the sawmill we came to a large trout farm and just
beyond the trout farm there was a footbridge over the River Rye.
|
About 350m beyond the sawmill we did pass the local sewage works,
but that and the industrial estate were soon behind us. We continued
along the riverbank following the Ebor Way route.

As soon as we has crossed the bridge we turned right off the Ebor
Way at map ref. SE631820, to follow a footpath along the river side
heading back to Helmsley.
|
We crossed the river on the footbridge and here the Ebor Way heads
across the fields to the village of Sproxton.

At the main road we retraced our steps back into Helmsley. The whole
walk had been a little over 5km and it had taken us about two hours
to walk on this warm afternoon.
|
We followed this path for almost 2.5km to the A170 bridge over the
River Rye on the edge of Helmsley at map ref. SE614835.
