There were numerous WW2 vehicles and equipment displayed next to the hall. There were many people in period dress and uniforms and from time to time there were period entertainments in the arena set up behind the hall. We sat and had a coffee and listened to the 1940's music - all very nostalgic, except of course at the time things were very hard and no-one knew what the final outcome would be.

My wife & I are spending a week at a holiday cottage in Alnmouth, Northumberland. We decided (well actually my wife decided) to use our National Trust membership to visit some of the many lovely National Trust sites here. Today we drove to Wallington, a National Trust site west of Morpeth. When we arrived we found "Wartime Wallington", a World War 2 event in progress.

The route is way-marked and we followed the path through the West Wood down to the River Wansbeck. After several hundred metres, in an area of the woodland called Wallington Dene, the path crossed the river on a footbridge and continued along the other bank.

The National Trust web site for Wallington has details and maps for several family walks from Wallington. We decided to do 'The Riverside Walk' starting from the area at the back of the hall.

There was a gate onto the road here but we followed the path down to the bridge and a pathway beside the river under the bridge.

It was a very pleasant walk through the woods and after about 700m we came to a lovely ornamental stone arch road bridge over the river.

We crossed the stepping stones and followed the path across a field and out to a minor road at map ref. NZ036842.

On the other side of the road we continued across the fields by the river for another 500m to some stepping stones across the river.

Here the public footpath turned right and we turned left to follow a path to a gate in a high stone wall.

We crossed the road and continued along a public footpath through the parkland for about 300m

We completed our circuit and walked past the lovely border by the glass house again to the gate out of the walled garden and into the East Wood by the Chinese Pond.

The gate opened into the walled garden by a glass house with a stunning wide border display of orange, gold and red flowers. We made a complete circuit of the walled garden (there's a little cafe near the bottom of the slope).

We listened to the 1940's music for a while before making our way to the car park and the end of our visit to Wallington.

We followed the wide paths round the pond and through the East Wood to a road (B6342) near the hall. We crossed the road and made our way along the path through the parkland back to the hall. We passed through the gateway at the side of the hall and into the grassed area behind the hall where the WW2 event was still in progress.
