This week we are staying with a group of friends in a large holiday cottage on the hillside above the town of Windermere. We are planning to do some gentle walks despite the rather mixed weather forecast, typical Lake District weather.

From the car park we walked back to the main road (A592). At the car park entrance we turned right to walk north west along the A592 for about 300m. Here we turned right off the main road to follow a public footpath along the access road to Side Farm.

We planned to meet around 4.00pm at the holiday cottage so, to make the most of a fine day, my wife and I stopped off in Patterdale at the public pay & display car park opposite the Patterdale Hotel at map ref. NY 412 161.

We followed the access road through the farm and then turned left to follow a public bridleway along an access track heading down the valley towards Ullswater.

The access road took us through the fields for about 400m and across the beck flowing into Ullswater to Side Farm at map ref. NY 398 162.

It was a pretty spot with a rocky outcrop at the edge of a group of conifers and we sat there for our lunch watching several similar clinker built sailing dinghies on the lake below.

The track climbed up a little above the level of the lake giving us lovely views across Ullswater to Glenridding and the landing stage for the lake steamers. About 1.5km north of Side Farm we came to a high point in the track with a lovely view over a bay to the south west of Silver Crag.

There were lovely views all around us and across Ullswater from this place. From there the track bent round to the east to make its way around the northern end of Silver Crag above Silver Bay.

After our break we continued following the bridleway along the track dropping down around the western side of Silver Crag towards Silver Point. The track climbed up to a high point at map ref. NY 394 182.

After about 300m the steep climb levelled out on the saddle between the hills and a magnificent view opened up ahead of us looking southwards along Ullswater.

At map ref. NY 397 182 above Silver Bay we turned right off the main path to follow a bridleway up a steep climb heading generally southwards to a saddle between Silver Crag to the west and Birk Fell to the east.

After about 1km we came to a iron seat beside the track commemorating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. We continued to map ref. NY 398 163 directly above Side Farm.

We continued following the bridleway along the track heading southwards with views across the lake to the lakeland fells beyond.

Then we made our way along the farm access road back to the A592 in Patterdale and back to the Patterdale Hotel car park and the end of our walk. We drove along the A592 to Windermere and were just in time to meet our friends at the holiday cottage. We'll be very lucky if the weather for the rest of the week is as good as today!

This is open access land down to the access track at the farm and there is a well walked but very steep path down to the access track about 50m north of the farm. We carefully picked our way down this steep slope to the track. From there we retraced our steps through Side Farm.
