General Directions (see markers on the route map)

1.) Start at the little lay-by on the A683, map ref. SD698969, next to the Cross Keys Temperance Hotel. From the lay-by take the footpath down to a footbridge across the River Rawthey. Once across the river turn left and follow the bridleway along the riverbank. About 400m from the footbridge bear right off the bridleway to follow a footpath next to Cautley Holme Beck for about 1.2km to the bottom of the Cautley Spout waterfalls. Continue along a rocky path climbing up to the head of Bowderdale.

2.) Follow the path beside Bowderdale Beck for about 800m to join the bridleway down Bowderdale. Follow the bridleway down Bowderdale for about 5km to a track around the intake wall of some fields at map ref. NY669035.

3.) At the track around the intake wall of some fields at map ref. NY669035, turn sharp left to double back climbing up the farmers quad bike track to the ridge of West Fell (map ref. NY670017). From the top of West Fell, continue along the ridge for another 2km to the top of Hazelgill Knot. From the top of Hazelgill Knot continue along the ridge for another 3km to trig point at The Calf (map ref. SD667970).

4.) From The Calf follow the bridleway southwards for about 1km to Calders via Bram Rigg Top. At Calders turn left to follow the ridge for about 1km to the edge of Cautley Crag at map ref. SD680964 via Great Dummacks.

5.) At the edge of Cautley Crag turn left to follow the path around the edge of the crag dropping down to the head of the Cautley Spout series of waterfalls. Follow the very steep path (with steps in places) down the north side of the waterfalls to rejoin the outward route at the foot of the waterfalls. Follow the path back alongside Cautley Holme Beck to the footbridge over the River Rawthey and return to the lay-by on the A683 and the end of the walk.
