For the last few years I've had a Christmas/New Year walk with my family, and this year there were six of us plus my daughter's dog, a very energetic black Labrador cross. We drove up to the visitor centre at Sutton Bank. We set off from the visitor centre at about 11.15am heading northwards along the Cleveland Way on the edge of the cliff with the view out to the Yokshire Dales away to our left. It was a gloomy day with some dark shower clouds about, but very mild for this time of year. After a couple of hundred metres from the visitor centre at map ref SE 511823 we turned left off the Cleveland Way to descend a steep path through the woods to Gormire Lake. It's a very pretty spot with lovely views through the trees across the lake. At the lake we turned left to follow the path all the way round the edge of the lake and rejoined the main path at map ref. SE 503835. We continued along this path for about a kilometer to map ref. SE 501844. Here we climbed over the stile on our right and followed the diverted path south of Southwoods Hall and began the 160m climb back up the escarpment to map ref. SE508851. Once at the top we followed the Cleveland Way along the edge for about 3km back to the visitor centre. The whole route was about 10km and took us 3 hours to walk including a short stop for a drink and a scone that my wife had made for us this morning.
