We turned right here onto a cycleway and footpath
About 50m before we reached the large roundabout on the York outer ring road we turned right along a footpath and cycleway that led us to a crossing point on the A19 Shipton Road. We crossed the main road here and followed the path round the corner making a left turn to walk along Manor Lane. |
Since last weekend the weather has been warm, fine, bright & sunny. It is expected to be the same today before cooler showery weather moves in over night. So this morning my friend, Jim, and I drove to the Rawcliffe Park & Ride site off the A19 at the York outer ring road. We parked here and walked along the road towards the northern end of the site.
The cycleway & footpath led us to this crossing point on the A19
|
After crossing the A19 we followed the footway round the corner into Manor Lane
|
Following the footway along Manor Lane
From the bend the road was then called 'Village Street'. Just before Village Street and running parallel to it there was a public footpath along a tarmac path through an area of grassland. |
Despite being an access route through a large housing estate Manor Lane was quite a pleasant leafy walk in the autumn sunshine. We continued along Manor Lane for about 600m to a point where the road bent to our right.

Public foot[path along the end of the recreation ground
There was a hedge on our right and the recreation ground on our left. We walked along the edge of the recreation ground to its corner and turned left to continue around the end of the recreation ground. The path then turned right over a wooden footbridge heading away from the recreation ground and towards Rawcliffe Lake. |
We turned right and walked along this public footpath through this grassy open area for about 350m until we came to a parking area in front of the Rawcliffe Pavilion Community Centre. Here we turned right and then left to go around the community centre and continue along the public footpath at the edge of a large recreation ground.

Narrow path to our left to join the path round the lake
Following the path around the lake
We walked along the perimeter path heading northeast with the lake on our right. There were a couple of seats on the mown grass overlooking the lake and sat there for a few minutes just to enjoy the view. |
After about 100m we could see the lake ahead and there was a narrow path off to our left. Here we left the public footpath and took this narrow path to our left and joined a tarmac path around the lake.

Path round the southern end of the lake
At the southern end of the lake we rejoined the public footpath and begin to head north west still with the lake on our right. About 120m from the southern tip of the lake we came to a footpath on our left heading away from the lake into the head of a cul-de-sac called Greystoke Road. |
From the seats we continued around the northern end of the lake and followed the path along the eastern side of the lake. There was a group of about 20 greylag geese on the water and a smaller group of mallard ducks. We followed the path around the southern end of the lake.

Walking along Westholme Drive
Then we turned left off Eastholme Drive to walk along Westholme Drive. We turned right on to Patterdale Drive and then left to walk out to the A19, Shipton Road. |
Here we turned left leaving the public footpath to follow the path out to Greystoke Road and along Greystoke Road to Eastholme Drive. We turned right to walk along Eastholme Drive for about 130m.

From the allotments the track leads down to the footpath that goes from the Park & Ride site into the centre of York along the edge of the ings. |
We crossed the A19 and walked along the track opposite up to the Rawcliffe Allotments. It is a large area of well tended allotments with a wide track through the site.

Heading back to the Park & Ride along the ings path
Path back to the Park & Ride site
It had been a surprisingly pleasant walk of almost 5km through this vast housing estate and around the pretty lake, that had taken me and my wonky knees over two and a half hours to walk. |
At this tarmac footpath we turned right to follow the path for about 600m to the turning off the ings path back into the Park & Ride site. We followed the path back to our parking spot and the end of our walk.
