The ruins of Melrose Abbey from the climb onto the Eildon Hills
My wife spent much of her childhood with an aunt and uncle in Northumberland, and has long held an ambition to visit many of her old haunts by walking the St. Cuthbert's Way national long distance trail that goes from the ruins of Melrose Abbey in the Scottish borders to the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory on Holy Island in Northumberland, a distance of 100km. When I started to plan our expedition I had to pick a day to finish at Holy Island when the tides would give us plenty of time to cross the 5km causeway to the island at low water. Then it was a matter of working back to the start to book the accommodation at the end of each days' walking.
We used a baggage transfer service (The Sherpa Van Project) that proved to be very efficient. I booked it on-line and the bags turned up ahead of us as if by magic at each new stopping point. We never spoke to anyone or saw anyone - brilliant! On Friday 15 April 2005 my stepson drove us to Melrose after he finished work. It was a 3 hour drive in heavy rain and strong winds - not an auspicious start. We checked into a pub in Melrose and after a good pub meal we had an early night ready for the start of our adventure. (Poor Tim had another 3 hour drive home in the rain - Thanks Tim!)
Note: The distances I quote are between our B&B's and may differ from the official route guide, but it's between B&B's that we had to walk.
