We had stayed overnight in the pub in Morebattle in a very comfortable room and good food. We managed to keep to our early start routine and set off at about 8.50am It was not a good day. There was a strong wind and nasty squally showers with low cloud on the hills. We walked down the hill out of Morebattle to cross Kale Water. This whole area is cattle rearing country and a large herd of beef cattle that we passed had turned their winter quarters into a complete quagmire. Of course the river was in flood but the little footbridge was still just above the water level.

Once across the river we began the long climb to the top of Wideopen Hill - the highest point on the route at 368m. Today it was just in the clouds with trails of cloud blowing across the ridge below us at high speed. Then is was down from Wideopen Hill to Kirk Yetholm and again from the hill it seemed that the whole valley of Bowmont Water was flooded. It was a short day today - only 10km and we arrived at the pub in Kirk Yetholm at about 12.30pm for some lunch. We stayed there overnight and had a really good evening meal (huge steak pie and chips)
